SAP S/4HANA
The Intelligent ERP
About
SAP S/4HANA is SAP's flagship intelligent ERP suite, built on the SAP HANA in-memory database. It represents the next generation of SAP's enterprise software — succeeding SAP ECC (ERP Central Component) which powered the world's largest companies for decades.
S/4HANA provides real-time analytics, embedded AI (SAP Business AI), and a modern user experience through SAP Fiori. It is the ERP of choice for Fortune 500 companies, governments, and global enterprises that need to manage complex, multi-country operations at massive scale.
History
SAP was founded in 1972 by five former IBM engineers in Mannheim, Germany. The company's R/2 (mainframe) and R/3 (client-server) systems defined the ERP market through the 1990s-2000s.
SAP S/4HANA was launched in 2015 as a complete rewrite of the SAP Business Suite on the HANA in-memory platform. The migration from SAP ECC to S/4HANA has been one of the largest technology transformation programs in enterprise IT history. SAP announced that maintenance for ECC will end in 2027 (extended to 2030), driving global migration. By 2024, SAP had 30,000+ S/4HANA customers and cloud revenue exceeding $15 billion annually.
